Rain Man

Tonight saw me beginning week 6 of the couch to 5k program, it also saw me running in the rain for the first time.  Sunshine is overrated anyway.  The running was fairly simple or so I thought but after checking the site it appears I made a boo-boo and ran too far (go me!), warm up then:

  • Jog 1/2 mile (or 58 minutes)
  • Walk 1/4 mile (or 3 minutes)
  • Jog 3/4 mile (or 85 minutes)
  • Walk 1/4 mile (or 3 minutes)
  • Jog 1/2 mile (or 512 minutes)

I meant to run for 12 minutes at the end, I thought it was an 8-5-8 split and not a 5-8-5 one, I feel so foolish.  Just shy of 4 miles in 40 minutes, not too shabby.  Tonight was quite an enjoyable run, I felt I could keep pace quite well and wasn’t breathing out of my arse after 2 minutes.  It was also a somewhat frustrating run, do you think there is a world record for the number of wheelie bins sworn at in a 30 minute period?  If not, dig up Norris McWhirter and tell him I set one tonight.  Stupid bins.  Norris had a twin you know, his brother Ross clearly got the better name but also got assassinated by the Provisional Irish Republican Army.  True story fact fans.

As well as being annoyed by bins, I had some other thoughts tonight, in no particular order they were:

  • Splashing in puddles is still fun even as a grown adult
  • Slivery spits that dribble onto your chin are still embarrassing even if nobody sees you do it
  • Rain jackets are good at keeping the rain out, and equally good at keeping the sweat in
  • People on bikes who coast past you without holding the handbars deserve to fall headfirst into a bin, plenty wheelie bins around
  • Running in the countryside without a big, stupid dog by your side is quite scary exciting
  • I shouldn’t know all the words to My Sharona

Music wise things had a very 90s Britpop feel to it, EMF, KLF, Blur and The Bluetones playing, along with My Sharona (I’m sad enough to know the words but not the band……..honest) and lastly Daft Punk.

On returning home for my shower, I strangely discovered some leafs in the bath.  It’s funny how when you become a parent you just accept these things and move them to one side without questioning why they are there in the first place!  A well earned rest day tomorrow but tune in later for more words on a screen that you can read.  I’m gonna go take a celebration piss.

The Monday morning weigh in

As well getting fit, I’m hoping to shed a few pounds doing all this extra exercise.  I have a dodgy knee, and the physio told me to take complete rest for about 3 months, as a result I went from a normal 13 1/2 to a whopping 15 1/2 stone, which, according to my BMI, made me officially obese!  Don’t worry I was disgusted with myself too!  I’ve started to eat less crap, I’m now a posh wine drinker rather than a lager monster and, of course, I am now in training for a marathon.  I weighed myself last week if you remember and was shocked and dismayed to discover I had actually put some weight on.  Well this week is a different matter, I hopped on the scales this morning and weighed in at *triumphant fanfare* 14 stone 3.  The downside to this is that I bought some rather nice jeans when I was a chubby bugger and now they’re too big for me, decision time put the weight back on or buy some more jeans…

Sunday, bloody Sunday

What a great song. It really encapsulates the frustration of a Sunday, doesnt it? You wake up in the morning, youve got to read all the Sunday papers, the kids are running round, youve got to mow the lawn, wash the car, and you think Sunday, bloody Sunday!

Man what a day, I’m just sitting down for the first time.  Today, from about half 9 to half 7 I was on my knees, not begging for forgiveness from the mrs for a change but laying a new floor in the kitchen.  It does look lovely, all except the one wee patch of bare floor, one more bit of laminate and the flooring would be done but oh no off I go to B&Q tomorrow to buy another packet.

Anyway, you didn’t come here to read about me moaning, you came to read about my running.  So tonight was a simple one, 5 minute warm up and then run for 20 minutes, well I’ll see your 20 and raise you 5, that’s right 25 minutes of continuous running!!  If I mapped my run correctly then that means I ran 3 miles (including the 5 minute warmup) which means a 10 minute mile speed.  At that rate it’ll only take me 4 1/2 hours to run the marathon, easy!  I manage to keep a steady pace, except when Marvin sees another dog, or a cat or a bloody leaf blowing around then he takes off with me puffing along behind him.

What music was on your play list tonight?  I hear literally none of you ask.  Well tonight I had the Foo Fighters, CSS, Camera Obscura, Frightened Rabbit and The Decemberists keeping me company.  Sadly Girls Aloud couldn’t make an appearance tonight but the Rocky theme tune did make a most welcome cameo!  Rest day tomorrow, what with my DIY efforts and sterling running performance I’m bound to be a little sore.  Ah well, time for a glass of red.  Cheerio!

I would walk 500 miles

Ba da da dah

Ba da da dah

Ah there’s nothing quite like running in the countryside singing shouting songs at the top of your voice.  I’m loving this iPod play list to be honest, tonight I was kept company by artists such as Arcade Fire, Foo Fighers, Belle & Sebastian and of course Girls Aloud.  All great tunes but when those bespectacled twins from Auchtermuchty came in my ears (fnar) I stepped up the pace a little and shouted my way along the pavement.  Marvin seemed a little started by it all, poor wee bugger.

Anyhoo, I ran as you can probably gather from the first paragraph.  Tonight was:

  • Jog 3/4 mile (or 8 minutes)
  • Walk 1/2 mile (or 5 minutes)
  • Jog 3/4 mile (or 8 minutes)

With the obligatory 5 minute warm up and cool down before hand.  It was a good session, I could’ve probably ran faster but I had 5 aside last night and was a bit pooped.  Anyway, it’s 9pm on a Friday night and I haven’t had my tea, or more importantly, a beer.  So I’m away, thanks for reading.  I appreciate the two of you supporting me!

They say that music is the soundtrack of our lives

well some people do anyway, I thought it was a common phrase but Google returned only 581 results for the phrase.  Now I’m wondering who they are.  This particular soundtrack should be label what in the hell have I done?!  Today, with the help of a couple of mates, I put together a running play list for my iPod shuffle.  Tonight I ran and the soundtrack was, well, interesting to say the least.  It started off well with AC/DC’s Back in Black, The Cooper Temple Clause, CSS, The Shins, The Stone Roses and The Delays all made an appearance.  So did Girls Aloud…..don’t you dare judge me!  When those girls mention the fact they are love machines and sing about their negligees it makes me run that little bit faster!

So, onto the run.  Today I started week 5 of the couch to 5k program which meant I had to do this:

  • Jog 1/2 mile (or 5 minutes)
  • Walk 1/4 mile (or 3 minutes)
  • Jog 1/2 mile (or 5 minutes)
  • Walk 1/4 mile (or 3 minutes)
  • Jog 1/2 mile (or 5 minutes)

Being the naturally fit and highly toned athlete I am I managed another 5 minute run on the end of that and after mapping my run over at mapmyrun.com I worked out I ran/jogged 3.15 miles in a little under 40 minutes.  Usain Bolt wont be losing any sleep over the times (mainly because he runs the 100 metres but that’s just a detail) I ran but for me I was happy.  If I could get away with eating chicken nuggets for breakfast like Mr Bolt then I’d be even happier!   I then decided to see how that sort of pace would convert into marathon distance, here comes the maths.  So 26.2/3.15=8.3, but lets round it down to 8 for the sake of simplicity.  8×40 minutes = 320 minutes/60 minutes = 5.3333333333333 hours.  So if I kept that pace up I’d be finished the marathon in around 5 1/2 hours.  Given that I have only been running for about 10 days total that figure isn’t as horrendous as I thought but as I’ve said once, and I’ll say many times I still have a long way to go.  If I’ve made any mistakes in the maths there and I’d really end up running the marathon in about 12 hours, please feel free to keep that information to yourself.

Until next time, ta-ta.

Sunday: the day of rest and…

of a giant kick to the balls!  As well as trying to raise some cash for charity the marathon plan is also designed for me to lose the moobs and tone up a bit.  So after eating sparrow sized portions of food most of the week, and having gone on two runs I thought I’d maybe lose a pound or two.  Instead I lost *triumphant fanfare* minus 1 pound, yip I have put weight on.  I blame those deep fried treats I indulged in earlier in the week.  I think the good lady described it best when she said it was a bit soul destroying, what’s the point in eating less if I’m going to put weight on?!  I wont let this little set back, well set me back, after all muscle does weigh more than fat.  Except it doesn’t really does it??  I mean, as most of us learned at school, 5 pounds of feather weighs the same as 5 pounds bricks.

Anyway, weight issues aside today was a designated running day so after watching the frankly fantastic Manchester derby, I pulled on the lycra shorts (don’t worry I wear normal shorts over the top!) and went out.  Marvin was left at home as he’d already been out for a walk.  My stupid, poorly designed digital watch again decided to reset itself, this time during my first 5 minute run out so I had to guesstimate how far I’d run for.  Time for me to invest in a proper running watch (truth is I already have, hurry up and arrive).  That was my final session of week 4 in the couch to 5k program and it went well.  Next week the splits are easier to remember so I’ll enjoy my rest day tomorrow and be out again on Tuesday, tune in then for another exciting update!

Friday fun and frolics

Time was I used to go the pub on a Friday night, now I find myself out pounding the pavement.  A decent session tonight even if I say so myself, did the same splits as my last run:

  • Jog 1/4 mile (or 3 minutes)
  • Walk 1/8 mile (or 90 seconds)
  • Jog 1/2 mile (or 5 minutes)
  • Walk 1/4 mile (or 2-1/2 minutes)
  • Jog 1/4 mile (or 3 minutes)
  • Walk 1/8 mile (or 90 seconds)
  • Jog 1/2 mile (or 5 minutes)

But my crappy digital watch stopped itself during the first run, so I redid that one and then ran for 8 minutes instead of 5.  That’s right 8 whole minutes of running, I just need to add on another four and a half hours to that and I’m all set.

Wish me luck, etc etc.
